The Role

The Accounting Officer is responsible for supporting the Company's financial management by ensuring accurate recording, reconciliation, reporting, and control of financial transactions. The role will manage day-to-day accounting operations, maintain financial records, support budgeting and reporting processes, ensure statutory compliance, and provide timely financial information that supports effective decision-making.

Working closely with the Financial Controller and other business units, the Accounting Officer will help maintain strong financial controls, improve operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal financial policies.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Record Management

Record and maintain accurate accounting entries for all financial transactions.
Maintain the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers in accordance with accounting standards.
Prepare journals, accruals, prepayments, and adjustment entries.
Ensure completeness and accuracy of financial records.
Maintain organized accounting documentation and financial records.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

Process supplier invoices and ensure timely payments.
Prepare payment schedules and payment vouchers.
Monitor customer receivables and follow up on outstanding balances.
Reconcile supplier and customer accounts regularly.
Resolve payment discrepancies promptly.

Bank & Cash Management

Perform daily, weekly, and monthly bank reconciliations.
Monitor cash receipts and payments.
Maintain accurate petty cash records.
Support cash flow monitoring and treasury activities.
Ensure proper documentation of all cash transactions.

Financial Reporting

Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
Support month-end and year-end closing activities.
Prepare schedules supporting financial statements.
Analyze financial data and identify unusual transactions.
Ensure timely submission of financial reports.

Budgeting & Cost Control

Support the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
Monitor departmental expenditures against approved budgets.
Assist in variance analysis and cost reporting.
Track operational expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Support management with financial performance information.

Tax & Regulatory Compliance

Prepare schedules for VAT, Withholding Tax, PAYE, and other statutory deductions.
Support timely tax remittances and statutory filings.
Maintain compliance with relevant financial regulations.
Assist during tax audits and regulatory reviews.
Ensure proper maintenance of statutory records.

Internal Controls & Audit Support

Ensure compliance with internal financial policies and procedures.
Support the implementation of effective internal controls.
Prepare audit schedules and documentation.
Assist internal and external auditors during audit exercises.
Monitor compliance with delegated financial authority limits.

ERP & Financial Systems

Record financial transactions accurately within the ERP system.
Ensure data integrity across financial systems.
Support continuous improvement of accounting processes.
Generate financial reports from accounting software.
Assist in finance process automation initiatives.

Stakeholder Support

Provide financial information to internal departments as required.
Support procurement, commercial, supply chain, and operations teams with financial documentation.
Respond promptly to finance-related enquiries.
Build effective working relationships across the organization.
Promote financial discipline and accountability throughout the business.

Qualification & Skills

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
Professional qualification (ACA, ACCA, ICAN, or equivalent) or active progression towards qualification will be an added advantage.
Minimum of 3–5 years' relevant accounting experience, preferably within agribusiness, FMCG, manufacturing, logistics, retail, or commodity trading.
Sound knowledge of financial accounting principles, bookkeeping, budgeting, taxation, and financial reporting.
Good understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Nigerian tax regulations.
Experience with ERP systems, accounting software, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Microsoft Excel.
Knowledge of Power BI or financial reporting tools will be an added advantage.
